Love, Joleen: Gratitude

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

I wrote about "Transitions" in my last post, and today I'm linking up with Community Brew, to talk about "Gratitude". This is my first time participating in this particular link-up and when I saw the theme, although I wanted to contribute, I wasn't going to. It's been a long couple of weeks! I have [photography] work and [blogging] projects that are slowly piling up on me. Who would have thought that toddler sleep issues would be so tiresome and time consuming?!

But this doesn't sound like gratitude, now does it? The truth is, it's easy to get caught up in life's everyday issues. Sometimes you really do have to make a concerted effort to "look on the bright side" or take notice of all you have to be grateful for. Sometimes you have to decide to be grateful and not get caught in that terrible trap of comparison. I think it's pretty healthy to recognize that it won't always come naturally.

Last night was another exhausting effort of trying to help my son sleep. I'm really not sure what the answer is for us, but I do know that something will have to change. As a result, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning (pun intended) and could never seem to shake it. Tonight, we had an easy dinner at Panda and this was my fortune: "Fortune smiles upon you at this time." Cliché as it is, I really took a moment to smile to myself and contemplate all the things I have to be grateful for today. Because it really is so true -- I am fortunate.

Sometimes I can't even believe all the things God has seen me through - the darkest days of depression and anxiety - and I have no way of knowing of what lies ahead. I believe that a grateful heart is a joyful heart and as a Christian, we have a joy that is here despite circumstance, and a Savior to be grateful for, who will walk with us through all things.

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory." Romans 8:28-30.
