Mama Style: The Anderson's Sunflowers | Cumming, Georgia

Located 40 miles from downtown [Atlanta], in Cumming, Georgia, is The Anderson's Sunflowers. As a professional photographer, this is my most requested location each year and the tricky part is waiting on Mother Nature to figure out when they're going to bloom! Last year the farm opened mid-July but this year was a later season. The season is quick - only a few weeks at best, so I recommend stalking them on Facebook to stay up to date on any news. I always schedule my sessions on the very first weekend and the earlier the better. I offered one day of mini sessions this past Saturday and it was my first time splitting the day into morning and evening sessions. We could not have asked for better weather (considering the time of year) and I loved shooting at last light, too. I'll share sneak peeks from the sessions soon. I wanted to include this in my Atlanta City Guide because it truly is a must-see every year. This is why I was sure to include it in my recent blog post on Atlanta.net, 8 Best Places to Take Engagement and Wedding Photos in Atlanta

Even though I've been shooting there the last three years, the boys had yet to go with me. We decided over the weekend that we would go Monday night, after Ben got home from work. It takes us about 40 minutes [of street driving, not highway] to get to the farm and we had to swing by the ATM. It's $10 to take photos on your own ($35 with a professional photographer (and worth every dime!)) and then $8-12 depending on how many sunflowers you want to bring home. We brought home a half dozen. They only take cash and check and it's helpful to have a few extra bucks for a cold water bottle or lemonade, if they have any. We got there around 7:30 pm, which gave us around an hour before sunset. Despite the [little] cloud coverage and later hour, it was still super hot and we were all sweaty and ready for ice cream by the time we left. (This is yet another reason why the mini sessions work so well! You really don't want to spend more than 20 minutes out there!)
In addition to bringing the boys to check out the sunflowers, I'll admit that I had an ulterior motive. Despite the thousands of photos I've taken at the farm, I didn't have a single one with my own family! That needed to be rectified this year. I especially wanted some photos of me and Benjamin. He indulged me a bit. I'll even take the reluctant and fake smiles if it means dimples.
My little lover, loves to make Mommy swoon by putting my head in his hands and kissing my forehead or eyelids. I'll admit that this receives it's desired effect every single time. [A total side note for memories sake, he's now taking to coming up behind me and massaging my shoulders at any given time.] He wins at life and frankly so do I. *wink*
So, let's talk about this outfit. It is a Mama Style post after all! My sweet client and very good friend, Jessica, recently surprised me with a gift card to Dress Up and instructions to treat myself! On Saturday, between my sessions at the farm, I found myself at The Collection in Cumming, which happens to have a Dress Up in it. It also happened to be Tax Free Weekend. Scoooore!
I got the Tell It To the Tulips Green Maxi Skirt and Urban Nomad Cream Kimono. I think the see-through lace portion of the latter is supposed to come down more onto my arm but I didn't get my usual size. I actually purchased a Small because it fit my shoulders well and I thought I'd be swimming in anything bigger. The skirt I'm wearing is size Large.

I did something new and different [for me] on my nails and love how they turned out! I think it really compliments my edgy but understated jewelry. The gold diamond ring I'm wearing was given to me by my grandma when I was pregnant and it's one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. The Gorjana: Knox Pave Bar necklace and Trina Turk: Geo Stone Triple Drop [in Opal] earrings were both in this month's Rocksbox! Don't forget to use the code joleenpxoxo for your first box free!
Can we talk about my hair for a minute? My hair is pretty unrully most of the time. It's kinda curly but not quite (more like frizzy) and spends most of it's time in a "mama bun". I came across this hair tutorial on Penny + Boss, and thought I would give it a whirl. THIS hairstyle, ya'll, is what is up. It's so pretty and forgiving! I didn't have to straighten or curl my hair; I just let it air dry and threw it up. It literally took me all of five minutes! *all the angels singing*
And while I'm rejoicing and in this great mood, I just want to give my husband, a big virtual kiss for the photos he took of me last night! Seriously, for as much as I love capturing other people in my lens, I'm not the biggest fan of being the subject. This entire style series has been a real effort of mine to step out of my shell a bit; to try new things and ways of expressing myself. I wouldn't be able to do it without his support and talent. (Thanks for creating such beautiful images, babe!) Be sure to follow along with his Atlanta street photography on Instagram, if you aren't already.
